Preventive & cosmetic dental treatments
Even an Egyptian mummy has its teeth intact!
So you should not be losing your teeth due to ignorance. Here are some things that you can do to avoid losing your tooth (or teeth!!)
Teeth Whitening
One of the most popular cosmetic treatments that probably has the highest demand has been teeth whitening. A whiter smile is usually considered attractive and sometimes called the “Holywood smile”!

Teeth whitening can be done using two popular methods:
-
Bleaching.
-
Enamel Replacement (veneering).
Some factors affect the choice of method and also the pricing expectations of the patient.
Bleaching
Bleaching is done to whiten teeth by removing intrinsic stains. Oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are used to “oxidise” the surface of the tooth to lighten the shade of the tooth. While this is the easiest way to whiten one's teeth, this procedure is known to cause some sensitivity in some patients. Currently, some sealing agents can be used to minimize sensitivity. Bleaching takes approximately 1 hour for one full session (chair side).
Enamel Replacement
This is a more effective way of effective but less conservative way of whitening teeth. This is a procedure where the enamel layer is overlaid with a more rigid material that would improve enamel thickness and prevent the dentin layer from being visible. This eliminates the yellowish look of the tooth and provides a whiter outlook. Two main types of material can be used for this procedure i.e. composite material and porcelain material. Composite is a cost-effective option while porcelain is an aesthetically superior choice.
Scaling & Polishing
Our teeth become stained over time due to various food and bacterial action. Other than stains, calculus develops due to food debris in the mouth and the build-up of calculus can cause gum swelling and infection.
Scaling is done to remove calculus while polishing is done to clean stains on the tooth. This procedure helps keep the gum-tooth interface clean and healthy thus reducing the possibility of gum disease, swelling and bleeding.

Air polishing, when indicated, is used to remove finer stains to create a completely clean feel.
Fissure Sealant
This is a procedure to seal off minor grooves and fissures on teeth. These grooves and fissures are potential food traps that cause tooth decay. Sealing them makes the tooth surface smoother and reduces the tendency for food to be trapped within the crevasses. Fissure sealant is very popular especially for children as it helps them maintain considerably healthier oral hygiene and also prevents premature decay.

Topical Fluoride Application
This is to apply fluoride on the tooth surface topically to enhance its resistance to bacterial acids and other tooth decay-forming fluids. Most toothpaste has added fluoride and drinking water in many countries also has added fluoride for teeth protection. As such this is a procedure that may be considered in cases of severely weak tooth surface.
