Joon Dental Clinic (USJ10, Subang Jaya)
Established in 2003
Dentist in Subang Jaya
Dr Joon Muthamah
Graduated from University of Malaya, 1991
Hi, I am Dr Joon your friendly neighbourhood dentist serving USJ residents since 2003. I am proud to say that I have the tact to deal with kids who are anxious on the dental chair, and the patience to manage senior patients who need attentive conversation to understand the treatment procedure.

I graduated in 1991 from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and then joined Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Bahru for attachment training. That was a brilliant opportunity to learn from senior dental specialists, Dato' Dr. Tan Nam Hoo (Consultant, Maxilo-Facial Surgery) and Dr. Chen Swee Lian (Consultant, Oral Surgery).

After completing a 2-year attachment, in 1993, I was appointed as the Dental Surgeon in charge of the Tangkak Hospital's Dental Clinic and later moved to the Kluang District Hospital in Johore.
By 2003, I felt that it was time to set up my practice and JOON DENTAL CLINIC was founded to serve the USJ and Subang Jaya residents. Interestingly, “Joon” was transliterated into Mandarin as “ä¿Š” which meant beautiful (?).

On my personal side, I am an avid yoga practitioner and also love trekking. I have successfully climbed Mount Kinabalu twice, Mount Tahan and various other G7 mountains in Malaysia.

Chronology of Events
1986 - Pre-University:
I completed my Form Six at the High School Kluang (Johore) and was offered to do Dental Surgery in the University of Malaya.
1987 - University:
At the University of Malaya, being a Committee Member in the Asia Pacific Dental Association's Annual Congress gave a good beginning to my exposure to international developments in dentistry. My visit and 2-weeks stay with a rural community in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan under our Student's Service Corps was an excellent experience too.

1992 - Started a career with the Government:
Joined the Sultanah Aminag Hospital in Johore Bahru at the Dental Specialist Clinic. This was a brilliant opportunity to work and learn under the leadership of Dato' Dr Tan Nam Hoo and Dr Chen Siew Lian. This tenure was a very good exposure to both restorative treatments as well as emergency maxillofacial treatments. Here I had extensive hands-on experience in treating accident victims and also assisting in specialised treatments such as treating maxillofacial injuries.

1993 - Dental Surgeon at Tangkak Hospital:
After the attachment training of 2 years, I was posted to the Tangkak Hospital’s Dental Clinic as the Dental Surgeon in charge of the Tangkak sub-district. This position gave me the experience of managing the day-to-day operations as well as the team of 12 direct staff. Our team planned and managed preventive treatments in more than 30 schools in the sub-district.

One of the very interesting parts of my job here was managing the treatment via mobile operations in rural areas and aboriginal (Perkampungan Orang Asli) villages in the Tangkak area. The management exposure received during this part of my career proved very valuable during the years to come while I embarked on my private practice.
1995 - Dental Surgeon at Kluang Hospital:
I requested a transfer to the Kluang Hospital's Dental Clinic in 1995. This is my home district, and I grew up in a small town called Layang-Layang in this district. Coming back to my hometown as a Dental Surgeon was a great pride and a sense of achievement considering that I hailed from a small town during my childhood days. This gave me a chance to serve my teachers, family and relatives. It was a marvellous feeling to see the same town from a different perspective.

2003 - Joon Dental Clinic:
After more than 12 years and having gained sufficient exposure to a variety of treatments and complexities, I figured it was time to explore the option of setting up my private practice.
I am glad that I spent the time in government service as that was a good platform to work with a team and handle cases on a broad variety. The hands-on experience that I gained during those years with the government is unmatchable.
Due to this, I am now able to make an informed judgement about treatments that best fit the patient’s needs. I am a proponent of “conservative dentistry” i.e., I prefer to save a natural tooth more than pluck-and-replace!
The inception of Joon Dental Clinic is the start of my humble new journey.
